Accountant fronts Anti-Corruption Court

An Accountant was produced at the Anti-Corruption Division Magistrates Court in Suva this afternoon charged for corruption related offences.
Jaswant Kumar an accountant by profession was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of Conspiracy to Defraud – Obtaining A Gain and one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage.
On the count of Conspiracy to Defraud – Obtaining A Gain it is alleged that between 1 April 2020 and 31 April 2020, Kumar and another conspired with the intention of dishonesty obtaining a gain in the sum of FJD$200 from a private individual.
For the count of Obtaining Financial Advantage, it is alleged that between 1 April 2020 and 31 April 2020, Kumar charged the fees for the delivery of Certificate of Citizenship of a private individual and in the process obtained a financial advantage of FJD$200 knowing that he was not eligible to receive such financial advantage.
FICAC State Counsel Mr Rajiv Pathak informed the Court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.
The Magistrate granted a non-cash bail of $1,000 for Jaswant Kumar and ordered not to interfere with the witness and not to re-offend whilst on bail.
Kumar was also ordered to surrender passport and all travel documents to the Court registry immediately.
He was further ordered to report to the FICAC Office in Suva on every last Friday of the month between 8am-4pm and not to change his address without prior approval from the Court.
A stop departure has been ordered for Jaswant Kumar to be enforce immediately.
The matter has been adjourned to 19 September 2022 for plea.
