The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has charged Usaia Daunivalu an Accounts Officer with the Water Rates Office with one count of Abuse of Office.

Daunivalu on December 19, 2003 is alleged to have approved the withdrawal of $300,343.94 outstanding water charges for water meter number KJ2710, the account of CIG Fiji Limited without the approval of the Minister for Finance thereby causing prejudice to the rights of the Government of Fiji.

He appeared before Magistrate Vani Ravono and asked for time to engage the services of a lawyer.

He requested the charge not be read until such time he engaged the services of a lawyer.

FICAC lawyer Paul Madigan had no objections to him being released on bail and requested the court to impose certain conditions which included him not leaving the country and to advise FICAC of any changes to address.

Magistrate Ravono released him on a $500 bail and adjourned the matter to February 25 for mention for Daunivalu to engage a lawyer and also on the above conditions.
