A Senior Immigration Officer was today Acquitted by the Nadi Magistrates Court.

Naibuka Vuli was Acquitted of one count of Abuse of Office and 12 counts of Extortion by Public Officer by Magistrate Mosese Naivalu.

Vuli was charged on 5th August 2009 for allegedly abusing his authority by using a private property he rented at Lot 12 Cawa Place, Martintar in Nadi as a Detention Centre without the approval of the Public Service Commission.

After a two-week trial, the learned Magistrate said that the Court found that the accused acted beyond his job description, as there was no mention in his job description any duty to provide care and custody for a fee.

He however said that in its entirety, the Prosecution had failed to satisfy the criminal standard of proof beyond reasonable doubt on all the offences that the accused has been charged with.

Vuli was acquitted accordingly.
