The former Fiji Institute of Technology Director, Kolinio Meo was acquitted of the charge of ‘Abuse of Office’ by Magistrate Amani Rokotuinaviti in the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Mr. Rokotuinaviti acquitted the accused under Section 210 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He dismissed the charge of ‘Abuse of office’ against Mr. Meo stating that there was no case for the accused to answer.

However Mr. Rokotuinaviti ascertained that Mr. Meo’s employment came under Section 4 of the Penal Code classifying him as a Public Officer.

FICAC is studying the ruling in order to determine its next cause of action.

Mr. Meo was earlier charged by FICAC for ‘Abuse of office’ for having abused the authority of his office for his own benefit, by recuperating at the Raffles Tradewinds Hotel in Lami, when on sick leave. He authorized hotel bill payments of $726.60 by F.I.T, without proper authority. This act was prejudicial to the rights of the Government of Fiji.
