Senior Research Officer Charged With Bribery

A Senior Research Officer for the iTaukei Lands Trust Board has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) on corruption related offences.


Josaia Waqairatu has been charged with two (2) counts of Bribery under the Prevention of Bribery Act No. 11 of 2007.


On the first count of bribery, it is alleged that between 01 September 2019 and 31 December 2019 in the Central Division whilst being employed as a Senior Research Officer at the iTaukei Lands Trust Board, Head Office, solicited an advantage of FJD $250 from a private individual, as an inducement to or reward for or otherwise on account of performing any act in his capacity as a public servant.


For the second count of bribery, it is alleged between 01 September 2019 and 31 December 2019 on the Central Division whilst being employed as a Senior Research Officer at the iTaukei Lands Trust Board, Head Office, accepted an advantage of FJD $200 from a private individual, as an inducement to or reward for or otherwise on account of performing any act in his capacity as a public servant.


FICAC Acting Senior State Counsel Joseph Work informed the Court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.


Resident Magistrate Ms Kiran granted non cash bail of $1000 for Josaia Waqairatu and ordered him not to re-offend whilst on bail.


Josaia Waqairatu was also ordered to reside at the fixed address in Tuatua Labasa, surrender all travel documents with the Court Registry and not to apply for new travel documents.


He was also ordered to attend Court on all given dates and to report to the Labasa Police Station on a fortnightly basis, that is, every second Friday.


A stop departure order has been issued against Josaia Waqairatu.


The matter has been adjourned to 10 January 2022.
