Former Court Officer Appears Before Anti-Corruption Division

A former Assistant Court Officer based at the Suva Magistrate Criminal Registry has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) on corruption related charges.


Jonasa Delai appeared before the Anti-Corruption Division of the Magistrates Court in Suva being charged with two (2) counts of falsification of documents and one (1) count of obtaining a financial advantage.


On the first count of falsification of documents, it is alleged that on or about 11 June 2019 in the Central Division, Delai falsified a Notice of Adjourned Hearing (NOAH), a document made by him in his capacity as an Assistant Court Officer at the Criminal Registry of the Suva Magistrate Court with the intention of obtaining a gain from a private individual.


In relation to the second count of falsification of documents, it is alleged that between 01 January 2018 and 30 December 2018 in the Central Division, Delai dishonestly falsified a Judgment Debtors Summon (JDS), a document made by him in his capacity as an Assistant Court Officer at the Criminal Registry of the Suva Magistrate Court with the intention of obtaining a gain from a private individual.


For the count of obtaining a financial advantage, it is alleged that between 01 January 2018 and 30 December 2018 in the Central Division, engaged in conduct, namely, prepared falsified court documents to purportedly assist a private individual in the civil claim and as a result of such conduct, obtained a financial advantage of $220.00 from the said individual.


FICAC Senior State Counsel Ms Sera Fatafehi informed the Court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.


Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou granted non cash bail of $500.00 for Jonasa Delai and he was ordered not to re-offend whilst on bail.


Jonasa Delai was ordered not to interfere with the state witnesses and not to change his addressing without informing the court first.


He was also ordered to report to the FICAC Office beginning 23 December 2021 and every month thereafter from 6am to 6pm.


A stop departure order has been issued against Jonasa Delai.


The matter has adjourned to 12 January 2022.
