A former Exemption Officer at the Department of Immigration and a former businesswoman were sentenced to three (3) years of imprisonment, whilst a businessman was sentenced to fifteen (15) months of imprisonment in the Anti-Corruption Division of Suva Magistrates Court today.

Ms. Sereima Rokovada was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for one (1) count of bribery and one (1) count of using a forged document in 2018. Ms. Ling Gao was also charged for one (1) count of bribery and one (1) count of possession of forged document, while Mr. Pavir Rattan was charged for one (1) count of bribery.

In sentencing remarks, the Resident Magistrate Mr. Jeremaia Savou stated that as a means of general deterrence, a suspended sentence was not proper in the circumstances even though the Accused were first time offenders.

It was found that in 2018, Ms. Gao and Mr. Rattan had offered a sum of $100.00 to Ms. Rokovada, who was an Exemption Officer at the Department of Immigration at that time, who was officially handling the extension of Ms. Gao's Work Permit, which she had accepted.

The Court had also found that Ms. Gao had possessed an altered Work Permit which was used by Ms. Rokovada, with the intention of dishonestly inducing an Immigration Officer to accept it as genuine.
