Suspect Charged for Abuse of Education Grant

A former District School Committee member was produced in the Labasa Magistrates Court today for the alleged abuse of the Free Education Grant.


Filipe Tuisabeto was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one (1) count each of Obtaining a Financial Advantage and Causing a Loss.


He is alleged to have deposited $1,200.00 FJD from the school’s Free Education Grant into his personal account for his own expenses whilst being the secretary of the school committee without the permission of the School Committee and contrary to the Free Education Grant Manual.


He is further alleged to have caused a loss of $2,056.96 FJD to the school by misappropriating the amount from the Grant between December 2014 and March 2015.


FICAC State Counsel Joseph Work informed the Court that first phase disclosures was served.


Resident Magistrate Seinileba Levaci released Tuisabeto on bail and ordered him to surrender all travel documents and to report to the Nausori Police Post every Saturday starting from 28 November.


The matter was adjourned to 20 February 2021.
