Police Constable Charged with Bribery

A Police Constable was produced in the Nausori Magistrates Court last Friday on corruption related offences.


The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged Mr Akuila Waibuta with three (3) counts of Bribery under the Prevention of Bribery Act.


He is alleged to have received a total amount of $450.00 FJD from an individual on three (3) different occasions, whilst serving at the Nausori Police Station.


The first exchange is alleged to have taken place between July and August 2019, involving $200.00 FJD, while the second and third exchange took place on 25 March 2020 involving $150.00 FJD and $100.00 FJD respectively.


He is alleged to have received this money on the account of performing any act in his capacity as a public servant.


FICAC State Counsel Ms Josann Pene informed the court that first phase disclosures was served.


The Accused was warned not to reoffend and surrendered all travel documents, with a stop departure order put in place.


The matter was adjourned to 16 June 2020.
