Former Ministry of Justice Employee Sentenced

The former Divisional Registrar West with the Ministry of Justice was sentenced to 22 months imprisonment in the Lautoka Magistrates Court on Monday.

Mr Iosefo Rabeka was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in February 2019 with two (2) counts of Obtaining a Financial Advantage.

He admitted to misappropriating $521.40 FJD meant for the registration and issuance of Birth, Death and Marriage certificates using the manual receipting system between January and May in 2017.

He also admitted to misappropriating $2,201.80 FJD, which was, collected for court marriages through the computerized receipting system between May 2017 and May 2018.

In delivering the Sentence, Resident Magistrate Ms Nayani Kasturirathne said that the Accused purposely manipulated the existing system in place to obtain a gain and that was a direct violation of trust that the general public has on that government institution.

Moreover, she stressed that the responsibilities of public servants are of great significance and since he was in a position of trust, he breached the trust of the members of the public and the government.
