Former School Manager Charged Again

A former School Manager charged with a corruption related offence last year received additional charges in a fresh case today in the Labasa Magistrates Court.


The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged Mr Thomas Hewson with one (1) count each of General Dishonesty – Obtaining a Gain and General Dishonesty – Causing a Loss under the Crimes Act of 2009.


He is alleged to have arranged for the facilitation of payments of School Manager’s monthly allowance to obtain $1,050.00 FJD from the Tuition Fee account belonging to the school he was managing.


He is further alleged to have caused a loss or a risk of loss to the school for authorising and approving a cheque of $6,000.00 FJD to be encashed from the same account which was used for unauthorised works in the school.


FICAC State Counsel Mr Sam Savumiramira confirmed with the Court that first phase disclosures was served.


The Accused was released on bail, instructed to surrender travel documents and not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.


Resident Magistrate Mr Bimsara Jagodage also issued a Stop Departure Order accordingly.


The matter was adjourned to 16 September 2019.


In his other matter, Mr Hewson is charged with a count of Obtaining a Financial Advantage for allegedly engaging in conducts to obtain $45,448.90 FJD.


The matter is still before the Court.
