A man who admitted to committing bribery was sentenced and fined in the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Former Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) Project Leader of Integrated Meter Management Mr. Tuimasi Cataki was sentenced to 10 months in prison, with three (3) months to be served and a fine of $2000.00 FJD to be paid immediately or an extra 200 days in prison would be incurred.

The remaining seven (7) months was suspended for two (2) years.

He was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) last year with one (1) count of Bribery for accepting $500.00 FJD from the Director of Sphynx Solutions Pty Ltd, who WAF had just awarded a purchase order to for the supply of 200 meter boxes.

The acceptance of this money was a violation of his role as a public official, especially since he was responsible for handling all dealings with Sphynx and upon receiving the $500.00 FJD, had failed to declare it to WAF which was a breach of their procedures.

Resident Magistrate Mr. Indula Ratnayake, in his Sentence said that the Accused abused the authority entrusted to him for personal gain and that the amount he received was indeed an advantage.

Furthermore, he declared that Mr. Cataki had acted in breach of the trust placed on him by the State and emphasized the firm view of the Court that bribery and corruption in society should not be treated leniently.
