A man convicted of posing as a police officer to obtain money was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Mr. Binesh Pillay was found guilty last month of one (1) count each of Obtaining a Financial Advantage by Deception and False or Misleading Information.

Whilst being in remand, he pretended to be a police officer at the Valelevu Police Station and obtained the sum of $300.00 FJ from a fellow inmate’s wife, after promising to assist in the release of the inmate from the Suva Remand Centre.

He also then provided a false residential address to a court officer while the court officer was filling out the Accused’s bail undertaking form.

In delivering her sentence, Resident Magistrate Ms. Deepika Prakash said that the Accused took advantage of the vulnerability of the person he obtained the money from.
