Police Sergeant and Vodafone Specialist Charged for Corruption

Two (2) men appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today charged with corruption related offences.

Mr. Rajneal Rakesh Kumar was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with two (2) counts of Bribery.

It is alleged that Mr. Kumar, as Vodafone Fiji Limited’s Specialist – Fraud, Risk and Corporate Security, allegedly solicited $7,000.00 and accepted an advantage amounting to $4,000.00 FJD on two (2) separate occasions between July to December 2018.

Additionally, FICAC charged Mr. Nilesh Kumar with one (1) count each of Aiding and Abetting Bribery and Abuse of Office.

The Fiji Police Sergeant allegedly helped the first Accused acquire $7,000.00 FJD from an individual under investigation which was an abuse of his authority.

FICAC Prosecutor Ms. Jessie Lagonilakeba informed the Court that first phase disclosures were served to both the accused and that there were no objections to bail however with strict conditions.

Resident Magistrate Ms. Waleen George released the men on bail after a cash bond of $2000.00 FJD each was paid with two (2) sureties each of a non-cash bond also of $2,000.00.

She also issued a Stop Departure Order and instructed them to report to the Nasinu Police Station on the last Sunday of every month, not to interfere with witnesses and to surrender their travel documents.

The matter was adjourned to 16 January 2019.
