A former Executive Officer was given a twelve (12) month sentence with six (6) months to be spent in prison and the remainder suspended for two (2) years at the Savusavu Magistrate's Court on 25 April 2018.

Ms. Nanise Gucake, formerly employed at the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management was charged with one (1) count of "Corrupt Transactions of Agents" by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in 2017.

Gucake was found to have collected a total of $418.00 from nine (9) different people from the districts of Korotasere, Saqani and Tawake between February and April 2015 for her own personal use.

Her misdeeds were revealed during an internal revenue audit in the same year when it was discovered that the accused attempted to overwrite the dates and figures on the copies of the receipts to cover her tracks.

In sentencing, Resident Magistrate Ms. Senileba Levaci stated the Court recognized that Gucake is a first offender and had entered an early Guilty plea, however her conduct was a serious breach of trust and a message of strong deterrence needs to be given to Communities for such offences.

Twenty eight days (28) has been given for Appeal.
