Former Divisional Education Officer Sentenced

A former Divisional Education Officer with the Ministry of Education (MOE) was sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment by the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Mr. Joe Hewson had pleaded to eleven counts of Forgery, eleven counts of Uttering Forged Document, eleven counts of Obtaining Money by Virtue of a Forged Instrument.

Hewson was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in 2009.

He had pleaded guilty to the offences which was committed in 2002. At the time of the offence, Hewson’s responsibilities included handling school projects in Vanua Levu and managing donor funds for the school communities.

It was proven that Hewson had forged eleven different Colonial National Bank withdrawal slips.

In sentencing, Chief Magistrate Mr. Usaia Ratuvili stated that “you have obtained a total of $13,005.98 from the account of Ratu Emeri Catholic School”

“There has been no reimbursement or any attempt therefore the Ratu Emeri Catholic School is still deprived of funds that it could have used for its projects”

Hewson is to serve a minimum of two years before being eligible for parole.
