Case Against a FICAC Labasa Officer

Investigation into an allegation that a FICAC officer, without declaring his interest to the institution, was also the President of the Kavugalei Youth Club in Labasa. He used monies donated by the Australian High Commission (AUSAID) for personal use. The monies were donated by AUSAID for the purposes of community projects.

The officer was charged by FICAC for Converting monies derived from the donor agency for his personal use and appeared before the Labasa Magistrates Court on 10 November 2008. His employment with FICAC was terminated on the same day.

Tui Turaga Vunibola pled guilty on 6th April 2010 to two counts of Conversion by Trustee. On 21st April 2010, he was sentenced by Magistrate Lakmal Wickramasooriya to 18 months imprisonment on each count to serve concurrently.
